In 1994 Space Shuttle Endeavour carried a memento from a NASA Astronaut on his first flight. Dawavendewa was honored to create on buckskin a depiction of the cosmos. Taawa the sun, is the center with Earth above and Moon below. Radiating from the sun is the Milky Way with four corn plants representing life on Earth. All is encircled by a rainbow, a symbol of water. With the buckskin was a prayer feather for blessings on the astronauts journey. Navajo stone fetishes were also included and all were blessed by a Tohono O’odham spiritual healer.

Gerald Dawavendewa is a member of the Hopi tribe. He grew up in the village of Munqapi, located in northern Arizona. In 1994, Gerald sent an artwork depicting the Hopi cosmos aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. He is also Author and Illustrator of the children’s book “The Butterfly Dance”. Gerald’s work reflects the rich traditions of his Hopi & Cherokee culture.
