Desert White Sweet (Modern Cross)

Zea mays.  This sweet corn variety was bred in Tucson in the 1970’s and 80’s from an O’odham white flour corn and a hybrid sweet corn variety.  Russ Buhrow, who for many years was the plant curator at Tohono Chul Park, developed this stabilized cross by depending only on monsoon rainfall and flooding.  His imitation of traditional O’odham methods and use of O’odham corn have preserved a high level of drought tolerance in this variety.  Occasional flour-type kernels may be present.
